Let me just add a little bit about the home visits we are doing to our first and second grade students and their families. Only two families have given me permission to write about specifics. We have to observe strict confidentiality. But the general pattern is, Guy and Bernie meet with a parents and I meet with the student.

Some of my questions are, “Do you want to show me your room? Do you want to go outside and play? Do you like to play board games and cards? I see some of your artwork, can you tell me more about them?” We can get into good conversations. If all else fails, “Do you have a video game you like?”

Also, I am meeting some older siblings who will not be going to the school. But I am seeing this is a very important relationship. It can affect homework, student behavior in class, and an extra pair of eyes.

This is the very stuff of life. It really should never be ignored!
